How many times do we have to say it?

It pains me to no end that there are seriously people out there who still peddle this fucking myth, surely you’ve got to be shitting me.

Ms Hagelin told the 500-strong crowd at Parliament House that if you allowed gay marriage, “anything” such as polygamy and marriage between paedophiles and children ”could be called marriage”.

Mrs [sic] Hagelin said there was “no greater evil” than the forces who proposed to legalise gay marriage and that they were in a “war for the future of the human race”.

Quoted from The Australian. Ms (or Mrs, The Australian’s editor seems to have let that one slip) Rebecca Hagelin attended a Conservative marriage rally in Australia on behalf of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative  organisation from USA that once complained that there were too many feminists at the meetings of the U.N. Committee on the Status of Women.

Now, spouting bullshit equating homosexuality with paedophilia by saying that one will lead to the other, has been around for quite a while now, but it’s still fucking offensive. And stupid.

And wrong.

In fact, less than 1% of paedophiles are gay or lesbian,* and to continue to perpetuate such myths is a kick in the face to queer people everywhere, contributes to a culture of irrational fear and hatred of queer people, distracts from real efforts to educate children and parents to avoid sexual predators, and at the very least, represents an unwillingness or inability to acknowledge the evidence that is slapping these arseholes in the face.

We put up with this shit in the 60’s and 70’s (well, I didn’t. I wasn’t exactly born then). The US had Anita Bryant and John Briggs trouncing around the country promoting laws banning gay men from being teachers. But this is 2011. And it’s easy to say “Oh, she’s just some conservative wanker” or “meh, it’s only Australia.” But Oz is just across the ditch from us, and a lot of things that happen there, affect us here in nuzilland.

Gays are not paedophiles — in fact, here’s a little fact about me: I don’t even find guys more than two years younger than me attractive (seriously, I don’t).

These arseholes can stick their fingers in their ears and pretend they’re in the 50’s all they want, but they should stick to facts and not spout fucking offensive, incorrect bullshit.

* Carole Jenny, Tom Roesler, and Kimberly Poyer, “Are Children at Risk for Sexual Abuse by Homosexuals?,” Pediatrics, 94(1), July 1994, pp. 41-44. (There’s some research that puts it as high as 7%, but that’s still hardly convincing)
